In an effort to improve the team’s defense, the UNC football program has hired former NFL coach Ted Monachino as a defensive analyst.

If you watched the UNC football team during the 2022 season, you know that the program definitely needs to improve its defensive unit heading into the new season.

On Tuesday, the Tar Heels announced a move that is aimed towards making that happen.

North Carolina has hired its second analyst in former NFL coach Ted Monachino. The 56-year-old heads to Chapel Hill with 16 years of collegiate and NFL experience under his belt.

As an NFL assistant coach, Monachino spent time with the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens, as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars. During his time with the Ravens, Monachino helped lead the organization to a Super Bowl title and was credited by Terrell Suggs, who was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year that season, as an instrumental part of his development.

Similar to what he’s done over his coaching career, Monachino will be working with the team’s defensive line and linebacker groups. He’ll look to help improve the team’s pass rush, an area that has really hurt the Tar Heels over the last couple of seasons.

The coaching staff as a whole will look quite different this season, but the objective remains the same. Overall, the goal is to build a postseason-caliber team around star quarterback Drake Maye, as the new-look coaching staff will do everything they can to make it happen.
