The UNC baseball program took care of business this weekend, as they swept Stony Brook in non-conference play at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill.

Good starting pitching prevailed, as the UNC baseball program swept Stony Brook over the weekend in non-conference action.

Max Carlson started the trend on Friday, as the Tar Heels’ ace pitched into the eighth inning. In the following contests, the duo of Connor Bovair and Jake Knapp each provided quality outings, as North Carolina’s starters combined to allow just five runs over 18.1 innings of work.

Mac Horvath continued his hot start to the season, as his solo home run in the 11th inning secured the walk-off victory for the Tar Heels. Horvath followed it up by hitting another home run in the first inning of Saturday’s game, giving him six home runs over the team’s first 10 games. This is the most by a UNC baseball player through the first 10 games of any season since at least 1999.

The final game of the series was more convincing, as the Tar Heels scored a season-high 15 runs to complete the three-game sweep. Jackson Van De Brake had another multi-home run game, while Vance Honeycutt added a two-run homer of his own. Tomas Frick continued his strong start to the 2023 season, as he strung together his first four-hit game as a Tar Heel.

North Carolina has benefitted from the long ball, as the team now has 25 homers through 12 games. The emergence of Van De Brake has been a tremendous addition to the Tar Heels lineup so far, as he’s become a lethal force in the middle of the team’s batting order.

Sitting at 9-3 on the season, the UNC baseball program will play back-to-back non-conference midweek games at home against Western Carolina and Penn State. These contests will lead up to the Tar Heels’ big upcoming three-game set against Virginia.
