Drake Powell’s major rise in the rankings now gives the UNC basketball recruiting class of 2024 three five-star commitments.

In the latest UNC basketball recruiting news, one of the Tar Heels Class of 2024 commits is among one of the biggest risers in the latest 247Sports updated rankings.

Drake Powell has climbed 37 spots, as he’s now ranked as the No. 19 overall prospect in his graduating class. With the jump in rankings, Powell also added a star to his name, as he’s now considered a five-star prospect.

As a junior, Powell has had a fantastic season, leading Northwood to a current 27-2 record. The future Tar Heel averages 18.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game heading into his team’s regional finals this upcoming weekend.

Here’s what 247Sports national recruiting analyst Travis Branham had to say about Powell’s jump in the rankings:

"“He jumped 37 spots because he jumped in his development. He’s made tremendous strides in his development over the last year in every single area. He has always been a great athlete, but his ability to put the ball on the floor, create off the dribble, pass, he’s improving as a shooter from both mid- and long-range, and his athleticism translates to defense where he always brings energy and a high motor. His ability to impact the game in every single way — he’s a high floor, high upside guy. There’s still plenty of potential to tap into. I think once others see him in the spring and summer, I think this is a kid that could make another jump.”"

Based on Branham’s comments, Powell has been improving his overall game over the last couple of months. With time to spare before he heads to Chapel Hill, it’s possible that the now five-star recruit will make an even bigger jump before his high school career comes to an end.

The UNC basketball recruiting team has now secured three five-star commitments in the Class of 2024. Powell now joins Ian Jackson (No. 5) and Elliot Cadeau (No. 11) as the trio of five-stars making their way to Chapel Hill.
