UNC Football: Drake Maye ranked among 2023 Top 10 players
UNC football star Drake Maye is one of the best-returning players in college football. Where does this latest top-10 ranking place him?
There is a lot of excitement heading into the 2023 college football season for the UNC football program, mainly in large part to the return of star quarterback Drake Maye.
Taking over the starting job as a redshirt freshman, Maye was simply outstanding, as he threw for 4,321 yards to go along with 38 touchdown passes. He was also the Tar Heels’ best running option, as he rushed for 698 yards and an additional seven scores.
Heading into the upcoming season, Maye has asserted himself as one of the nation’s best players. To no surprise, Maye found himself near the top of the list on On3’s top 10 players in college football for the 2023 season rankings.
The Tar Heels signal-caller ranked second on the list, only behind USC quarterback Caleb Williams. Maye and Williams are the only two quarterbacks on this offensive-friendly list, as seven of the 10 spots are occupied by players from this side of the ball.
Here’s what was said regarding Maye being regarded as the second-best player heading into the upcoming season:
"The Tar Heels’ season got off to a shaky start in 2022, but it quickly became apparent that Maye was going to be capable of lifting the team to some impressive heights. The freshman threw for 4,321 yards and 38 touchdowns, while also rushing for 698 yards and seven scores. Perhaps most impressive was his toughness. Maye never hesitated to put his body on the line when it could help his team."
Maye played a huge role in the Tar Heels’ success in 2022 and is expected to guide this team to new levels this year. If he’s able to replicate, or even improve, upon his first season as the starter, it’s very likely that Maye will be in contention to be the first quarterback selected in next year’s NFL Draft.
For now, UNC football fans can enjoy watching Drake Maye lead the Tar Heels’ offensive attack. With him under center, this group is capable of being a very special unit.
