Missing three starters, the UNC women’s basketball program showcased its depth en route to a dominant victory over Boston College.

The “next woman up” mentality worked for the UNC women’s basketball program on Saturday afternoon, as the short-handed Tar Heels took care of business against Boston College at Carmichael Arena.

441. Final. 55. 431. 73

North Carolina was once again without Alyssa Ustby and Eva Hodgson, but also were missing Anya Poole, who suffered an injury in the team’s prior contest. With just eight players to work with, Courtney Banghart decided to change things up with the starting lineup, as three players made their first starts of the season.

The Tar Heels rolled with regular starters Deja Kelly and Kennedy Todd-Williams and filled the rest of the lineup with Kayla McPherson, Teonni Key, and Alexandra Zelaya. It certainly worked, as the available players made the most of their extended opportunities.

Up by as many as 28, the Tar Heels were simply clicking on all cylinders. They shot 41.5% from the floor, including over 40% from three-point range

In her first-career start, McPherson was outstanding. She outscored Boston College midway into the second quarter, as she set new career highs in points (22) and rebounds (6).

Todd-Williams (16) and Kelly (12) paced the way with double-digit scoring outputs, while Paulina Paris knocked down three shots from beyond the arc off the bench.

It was certainly a team effort for the Tar Heels, as they forced the Eagles to turn the basketball over 25 times. Seven of the eight players who saw playing time in this one played more than 19 minutes, as each individual player made their mark in helping the team earn a dominant victory.

The UNC women’s basketball program has a few days to rest and prepare for a big upcoming matchup at NC State on Thursday night.
