When the UNC basketball program takes on rival Duke on Saturday night, the rivalry will renew, but this time with a new look.

The greatest rivalry in all of college sports renews on Saturday night, as the UNC basketball program will make the short trip to Durham for their matchup against the Duke Blue Devils.

This rivalry has plenty of history behind it, as the Tar Hees have had plenty of recent success to celebrate about. However, this upcoming battle will certainly be different, as the rivalry will take on a new spin.

For the first time since 1980, this historic matchup won’t include Mike Krzyzewski, as Jon Scheyer has taken over the reins of the program. This comes just a season after Hubert Davis took over at North Carolina, replacing legendary Roy Williams.

As both programs evolve toward the future, these two men are tasked with continuing the rich history that both universities have put together.

Scheyer recently noted that he and Davis had the opportunity to catch up a bit during the summer months. The current Tar Heels head coach made it known to the newly-hired Duke coach that the job can certainly take a toll on you.

Both leaders know what’s at stake. They’ve played a role in this rivalry before, as both spent time as players and assistant coaches at their respective schools prior to taking over at the helm.

The rivalry will look different for sure, but it’s an exciting time for both programs. That’s the beauty of this rivalry: the people involved may change, but the hatred and competitiveness between the two sides will always live on.

On Saturday night, expect another high-intensity game in front of a sold-out crowd in Durham, as both sides look to win the first of two matchups between the rival schools.
