Behind a team effort, the UNC women’s basketball program picked up its eighth consecutive ACC victory on Thursday night against Virginia.

The streak continues!

441. Final. 62. 446. 73

Behind a strong team effort, the UNC women’s basketball program defeated the Virginia Cavaliers on Thursday night at Carmichael Arena. With the win, the Tar Heels have now won eight consecutive ACC contests while improving to 17-5 on the season.

Even in a game where both teams struggled mightily offensive in the first quarter, North Carolina found a way to build and lead and hold onto it for good. Anya Poole and Kayla McPherson deserve a lot of credit, as they helped spark the team’s offensive attack.

Poole doesn’t score in double-figures often, as you have to go back to November 24 since the last time she did so. However, her offensive production was much-needed, as she connected on four of her five shot attempts to finish the night with 11 points and eight rebounds.

With Eva Hodgson sidelined, the return of McPherson couldn’t have happened at a better time. In her Carmichael Arena debut, the redshirt freshman showed off her tremendous skills, as she led the Tar Heels in points (14) and assists (four).

Five Tar Heels scored in double-figures, as Deja Kelly (13), Alyssa Ustby (12), and Kennedy Todd-Williams (11) joined the aforementioned Poole and McPherson in leading the team’s offensive attack. As a team, North Carolina shot the ball at a 53.1% clip, which is impressive, especially considering the slow start they got off to.

After that brutal four-game stretch a few weeks back, Courtney Banghart’s team has gotten hot at the right time. They’ll look to continue their recent success on Sunday as they hit the road to take on Louisville in an afternoon tip-off.
