UNC Basketball: Hubert Davis provides RJ Davis and Puff Johnson updates
As part of his weekly ACC conference call, Hubert Davis provided injury updates for UNC basketball standouts RJ Davis and Puff Johnson.
On Monday, Hubert Davis met with the media as part of his weekly ACC conference call.
Of course, one of the main questions was regarding the injury status of UNC basketball standout RJ Davis.
As we know, Davis took a few big hits during the team’s victory at Syracuse, a contest in which his night ended with him walking off the court with a bloody towel covering his face.
Hubert Davis provided a little extra information regarding the injury:
"“He (RJ Davis) got hit in the eye. It was swollen after the game. He couldn’t see out of one eye. They wanted to do x-rays to make sure that nothing was wrong around his eye, and anything broken. The swelling from his eye is gone, (but) he probably will have a black eye on Wednesday night.”"
Fortunately, the Tar Heels had the weekend off, which gave Davis a little extra time to rest. According to his head coach, the junior guard from White Plains, New York is making progress, as he’s expected to suit up when North Carolina takes on Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.
"“He’s done a lot of work. He’ll be practicing today. He did individual workouts, and stuff like that, all throughout the weekend. Every day he’s gotten better and better, and he’s in a really good spot right now.If things continue to improve, I anticipate him playing. Again, it’s Monday morning and we don’t play until 7 PM on Wednesday. But if things continue to progress as they have, I fully expect RJ to be in the lineup and be playing on Wednesday.”"
Davis has gone through individual workouts and will practice on Monday with the team. His coach believes that he will be able to play, but says that the program will monitor his progress up until Wednesday’s 7 PM tip-off.
As for Puff Johnson, Davis said that the junior forward is progressing, but his improvement is slower than the team anticipated. With this in mind, Johnson is once again not expected to play on Wednesday night.
It’s a very good sign to see Davis progressing, but it’s also concerning to see Johnson dealing with more injury woes. Needless to say, the UNC basketball program needs both players healthy for the upcoming stretch as we inch even closer to Selection Sunday.
