UNC Football tabs Jason Jones as new Cornerbacks Coach
The UNC football program has found its new cornerbacks coach, as they announced that Jason Jones will be taking over the position.
The UNC football program announced that they have found a new cornerbacks coach.
After the program and Dre Bly agreed to mutually part ways, the Tar Heels have tabbed Indiana safeties coach Jason Jones to fill the position. Jones comes to Chapel Hill with plenty of college football experience, both as a player and as a coach.
During his playing career, Jones was a two-year starter for Alabama. During his time with the Crimson Tide, Jones appeared in three bowl games and helped lead the program to the 1999 SEC title.
As a coach, Jones has had stints at Tulsa, Rice, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Florida Atlantic, and most recently Indiana. During that span, Jones has coached nine first-team all-conference honorees and 20 all-league selections.
With six years of defensive coordinator experience under his belt, Jones will be reunited with Charlton Warren. The duo coached together at Indiana, as Jones was a coach when Warren served as the program’s defensive coordinator.
In an official statement, head coach Mack Brown expressed his excitement about adding Jones to the staff:
"“We’re thrilled that Jason, his wife Kysha, and their children Andrew, Jace, Jathan and Jarah are joining the Carolina football family. He was highly sought after during this window and had a number of attractive offers available to him, so we’re excited he’ll be joining our staff. Jason has a wealth of experience coaching the secondary, and having worked with Coach Warren previously, he already has a firm understanding of our approach on defense. He has a proven track record of developing players across the secondary, many of whom have seen success in the NFL, and I’m looking forward to seeing him work with our cornerbacks moving forward.”"
Jones will look to help guide the re-shaping of the Tar Heels’ secondary, as there will be plenty of changes in the back end of the team’s defensive scheme this upcoming season.
