UNC Basketball: Armando Bacot rebounding his way towards history
Against Notre Dame, UNC basketball standout Armando Bacot took a step closer to capturing the program’s rebounding record.
At this point in his career, it just seems as if UNC basketball star big man Armando Bacot is making history every time he touches the basketball court.
Over the next few weeks, Bacot will be chasing more program history, as he now just has one person to catch on the team’s all-time rebounding leaderboard.
On Saturday afternoon, Bacot took over sole possession of second place on the list, as he jumped Sam Perkins, who had 1,168 rebounds as a Tar Heel.
To make the accomplishment even more impressive, Bacot, who currently has 1,169 boards, has played in 20 fewer games than Perkins did up to this point in time.
Now that Perkins is out of the way, Bacot is chasing UNC basketball legend Tyler Hansbrough for the top spot on the list. Heading into this week’s action, the Richmond, Virginia native is exactly 50 rebounds away from tying the record.
If Bacot continues to rebound the way he has all season, averaging 11.1 rebounds per game, it should take the Tar Heels star about four to five games to take over the record. If he has some strong rebounding performances, January 21 against NC State may be the day, which would be ideal given the Tar Heels’ next game is away against Syracuse on January 24.
Regardless of when or where it happens, Bacot is in line to become the program’s rebounding king. It is a huge accomplishment and goes to show just how effective Bacot has been as a rebounder during his time in Chapel Hill.
The University of North Carolina has had plenty of standout big men come through the program, and Bacot is destined to rebound his way to the top of the leaderboard in the very near future.
