On Monday night, UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis announced some unfortunate news regarding redshirt freshman big man Will Shaver.

A few weeks back, redshirt freshman Will Shaver suffered a broken bone in his foot. At the time, it was unclear as to how long Shaver would be sidelined, but now we officially have more details.

On Monday night, UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis announced on his radio show that Shaver will undergo surgery, forcing him to miss the remainder of the 2022-2023 season. Before suffering the injury, the Birmingham, Alabama native appeared in just three games for the Tar Heels.

After joining the Tar Heels at the midseason mark in 2022, Shaver suited up and practiced with the team but did not see any game action. As a result, the 6-foot-10 big man decided to redshirt, as he hoped to make a bigger impact heading into the 2022-2023 campaign.

However, Shaver struggled to see the floor, as the likes of Armando Bacot and Pete Nance filled up most of the frontcourt minutes. He then went down with a foot injury, one that was suffered during practice.

The news is disappointing for sure, but he’ll look to rehab and get back to full strength in an effort to make an impact on the UNC basketball program at some point in the future.
