Two North Carolina legends cap off careers in style

Erin Matson has had an illustrious career as a member of the UNC Women’s Field Hockey program. In fact, you can make a strong case that Matson belongs on the Mount Rushmore of North Carolina student-athletes.

In her final game as a Tar Heel, Matson went out in style.

With an undefeated season on the line, Northwestern tied the national championship game at one late in the contest. The tie would last just 39 seconds, as Matson once again stepped up in the big moment.

Matson scored a goal that would end up being the deciding factor, as North Carolina captured its tenth national championship in program history.

Not only was this the final curtain call for Matson, but it also was for legendary head coach Karen Shelton. After 42 seasons of leading the program, Shelton announced that she was retiring from coaching.

Both Shelton and Matson will go down in the history books, as their impact on the University of North Carolina will never be forgotten. For both, it would be pretty hard to even dream of better careers in their respective roles, as they both solidified themselves as true field hockey legends.
