The UNC Football program continues to lure in transfer portal talent, as their latest addition will stay in the ACC for his final season of eligibility.

Now that he’s finished business at Florida State, Amari Gainer wasted no time announcing his transfer destination.

Not even a day after helping Florida State win the Cheez-It Bowl, Gainer announced that he will be joining the UNC football program.

Gainer originally entered the transfer portal back on December 5 but elected to finish the season with the Seminoles. Along with the Tar Heels, Cincinnati and West Virginia were both in the mix for his services.

In 45 games for Florida State over a five-year span, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound defensive player made 18 starts at the linebacker position, recording 210 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, six sacks, and five forced fumbles.

This past season, Gainer was limited to just seven games due to injury, as he recorded 17 tackles to go along with one sack and a forced fumble.

Although he played linebacker for the Seminoles, the Tar Heels recruited him to be an edge rusher. Gene Chizik and North Carolina’s defensive staff must have a plan in place for Gainer, as he may be coming in to help fill a similar role that we saw Noah Taylor play in his limited action this past season.

Gainer becomes the eighth transfer to commit to joining the UNC football program. He is also the fourth of the group that will transfer in from another ACC program.

Adding guys with conference experience is definitely a bonus, as Mack Brown and company look to improve the team’s defensive unit in order to make a strong push for the 2023 season.
