UNC Women’s Basketball upset by Florida State
The final game of the 2022 calendar year did not go in the UNC women’s basketball program’s favor, as they were upset by Florida State at home.
It was a rough end to 2022 for Courtney Banghart and the UNC women’s basketball program, as they’ll take a two-game losing streak into the new year.
On Thursday night, the Florida State Seminoles came into Chapel Hill and upset the currently ranked No. 13 Tar Heels. The Seminoles were led by strong performances from Makayla Timpson (20 points, 11 rebounds) and Ta’Niya Latson (21 points, eight rebounds, six assists).
It was a back-and-forth game throughout, as both teams went on streaks that gave their side an extended lead.
First, it was the Seminoles who jumped out to an early lead at Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels would go on a run to tie the game before the end of the first quarter, and outscored their ACC foe by six in the second quarter to take a lead into the half.
The difference in this one came in the third quarter, as Florida State regained the lead by outscoring North Carolina 20-10. As much as the Tar Heels battled back, the Seminoles were able to hold them at bay, handing the UNC women’s basketball program their second consecutive loss.
North Carolina, who has been a very good three-point shooting team so far this season, could not get it going from deep, as they connected on just four of their 23 shots from beyond the arc. This is uncommon for the Tar Heels, as their inability to connect from deep really hurt them, especially as they tried to mount a late comeback.
Deja Kelly scored a team-high 20 points in 39 minutes of action, while fellow classmate Alyssa Ustby recorded yet another double-double performance (16 points, 13 rebounds). Kennedy Todd-Williams (16 points) and Eva Hodgson (12 points) were the other Tar Heels in double-figures, but both struggled mightily from the floor, making just 10 of their combined 32 shot attempts.
Overall, it wasn’t the Tar Heels’ best shooting night by any means, as it definitely came back to haunt them in this one. Fortunately, the UNC women’s basketball program will have a chance to right the ship in just a few days, as they’ll open up the new year with a battle against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia on Sunday afternoon.
