UNC Football: Cornerback Tony Grimes enters transfer portal
One of the biggest recruits in UNC football history has decided to take his talents elsewhere and enter the transfer portal.
On Monday night, cornerback Tony Grimes became the latest UNC football player to enter his name in the transfer portal.
The former five-star recruit was one of the biggest recruits to ever come to Chapel Hill, as he was viewed as one of the top cornerback prospects in his class. After originally being part of the Class of 2021, Grimes decided to reclassify, as he began his Tar Heel career in 2020.
As a freshman, Grimes appeared in 12 games, as he secured a starting spot during the final four games of the season. In 2021 and 2022, the Virginia Beach, Virginia native was a full-time starter for Mack Brown’s team.
In his time as a Tar Heel, Grimes totaled 97 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and one interception. He will have two seasons of college eligibility remaining once he finds a new home.
Grimes becomes the most prominent UNC football player to enter the transfer portal, as it’s up to 11 former Tar Heels who have announced their intention to leave Chapel Hill.
The new world of the transfer portal has made a huge impact on the college football world, as many notable players have elected to pursue other opportunities. Grimes joins that list of players, as he’ll not only look to finish his college career with another program but will look for an opportunity that helps him make his way to the next level.
