The UNC basketball program announced just prior to tip-off that D’Marco Dunn will miss several weeks of action due to a hand injury.

As the UNC basketball program prepared for its first ACC contest of the season against Virginia Tech, there was a notable player missing from warmups.

That player was sophomore D’Marco Dunn. Although North Carolina kept it quiet up until game time, they announced a pretty significant injury update regarding their reserve guard just prior to tipoff.

During the team’s practice on Saturday, Dunn broke a bone in his right hand. The injury will sideline him for several weeks, which is a major blow for the Tar Heels as they’ll be without a player who has been one of the few role players to see extended action early on in the season.

Through eight games, Dunn has averaged 2.8 points per game while playing just over 10 minutes per contest. He was coming off his biggest performance of the season, as he posted season-highs in minutes (17) and points (5) in the Tar Heels loss to Indiana.

It will be interesting to see how Hubert Davis allocates Dunn’s minutes in his absence. Will the likes of Seth Trimble, Tyler Nickel, and possibly even Dontrez Styles see more action, or will the Tar Heels’ second-year head coach utilize an even smaller rotation (if even possible at this point)?
