After tying the game to end regulation, the UNC football program fell short in double overtime against rival NC State on Friday afternoon.

It was not an ideal afternoon for North Carolina athletics.

Within a short amount of time between them, both the UNC football and UNC basketball program suffered losses.

After falling behind early, the Tar Heels football team battled back, but ultimately lost in double overtime to NC State to close out the regular season.

The Wolfpack got on the board quickly, as they scored a touchdown on their opening drive. They would extend the lead to 14-3, but North Carolina would battle back.

After not scoring a touchdown for three consecutive quarters (dating back to last week’s loss to Georgia Tech) Elijah Green found the end zone late in the first half to cut the lead to 14-10. However, NC State would respond, adding a field goal right before the half ended.

The Tar Heels and Wolfpack began the second half exchanging punts and missed field goals, but it was Drake Maye who ended the offensive drought with a 14-yard rush to tie the game. Unfortunately, on the next Tar Heels drive, Maye was hit as he threw, which forced the ball to pop up and be intercepted. This set up a Wolfpack score to take a 24-17 lead.

Here’s where things get interesting.

North Carolina had to drive down the field to tie it. On third and goal with under 10 seconds remaining, it appeared as if John Copenhaver scored a touchdown with no time remaining. However, the call was overturned, as the Tar Heels faced fourth down and goal with an added two seconds on the game clock.

Fortunately, the overturned call didn’t haunt them at the time, as Maye found Antoine Green in the back of the endzone to force overtime.

The Tar Heels stalled in overtime on offense, as they were forced to kick a field goal to open up the extra time of play. NC State responded with a field goal of their own and added another three to kick off the second overtime period.

Unfortunately, the UNC football program couldn’t make it happen in the red zone, as Noah Burnette missed a 35-yard field goal to end the game.

With the loss, the Tar Heels finished the regular season with a 9-3 record. They will look to end their current two-game skid in the ACC title game on December 3, as they’ll take on the Clemson Tigers.
