It wasn’t pretty by any means, but the UNC football program held on to defeat Wake Forest to capture the ACC Coastal Division title.

The UNC football program are your 2022 ACC Coastal Division champions!

It was a stressful night for Tar Heel faithful, as North Carolina had another nail-biting contest, this one coming on the road in Winston Salem against Wake Forest.

The Tar Heels got off to a great start offensively, as they scored on three consecutive drives. Josh Downs played a major role in the team’s early offensive success, as he scored three touchdowns and recorded over 100 yards receiving in the first half.

However, wide receiver Antoine Green suffered an injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the game, while Downs also was injured. Fortunately, Downs was able to return, but it was clear that he was hurting.

Wake Forest limited North Carolina to just 9 second half points. Even though the Demon Deacons held the lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Tar Heels found a way to secure the victory.

In need of a stop, the Tar Heels defense received a timely interception from Cam Kelly. This play setup what ended up being the game-winning field goal from Noah Burnette.

The defense certainly had their shaky moments, especially in the secondary, but they were able to come up with some crucial stops when needed.

Drake Maye once again proved that he firmly belongs in the Heisman Trophy talk, as he recorded 519 total yards of offense. He threw for 448 yards and three scores in the air, while adding 71 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Not only are the Tar Heels now 9-1 on the season, but they are also a perfect 6-0 on the road. This is the second time in program history that the Tar Heels have won the Coastal Division. The last time they won the division was during the 2015 season during the Larry Fedora era.

Although they have some unfinished business to take care of in the regular season, their ticket to the ACC title game has officially been secured! They have a matchup with Clemson brewing in a couple of weeks.
