Not only was UNC football standout Drake Maye named the Maxwell Award Player of the Week but is a semifinalist for the annual award as well.

Not many college football players, if any, have performed at a higher level than UNC football standout Drake Maye has this season.

His latest performance led the Tar Heels to a come-from-behind victory over Pittsburgh. In the contest, the redshirt freshman threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns, becoming the first-ever North Carolina quarterback to throw for 300+ yards in five consecutive games.

Taking notice of what he’s done on the field, Maye earned some recognition from the Maxwell Award.

For starters, Maye was named the Maxwell Award player of the week. Along with that honor, he also was named to the list of 20 semifinalists for the annual Maxwell Award, awarded at the end of the season to the best overall player in the country.

Here’s the list of players who join Maye on the semifinalists’ list for this year’s Maxwell Award:

Bryce Young – Alabama, QB
Jahmyr Gibbs – Alabama, RB
Brock Bowers – Georgia, TE
Chase Brown – Illinois, RB
Blake Corum – Michigan, RB
Drake Maye – North Carolina, QB
Michael Mayer – Notre Dame, TE
CJ Stroud – Ohio State, QB
Marvin Harrison Jr. –  Ohio State, WR

Jalin Hyatt – Tennessee, WR
Bijan Robinson – Texas, RB

Not only has Maye put the UNC football program on the map once again, but has solidified himself as one of the top overall players in the country. A strong end to the 2022 season would make Maye’s case even stronger to be considered for some of the most prestigious individual awards that are given out each year.
