In his first season as the UNC basketball program’s head coach, Hubert Davis led the Tar Heels to the national championship game.

Not many first-year head coaches could say that they had the type of success that Hubert Davis had with the UNC basketball program during the 2021-2022 season.

Although the Tar Heels had a few ups and downs, they got hot at the right time. Under Davis’ direction, North Carolina made a tremendous run to the national championship game, a run that was highlighted by a Final Four victory over rival Duke.

Heading into his second season, Davis has earned himself a raise.

According to multiple reports, Davis has agreed to a new contract that will keep him at the helm through the 2027-2028 season. Overall, the deal is expected to be worth about $16.7 million.

When Davis took over the program, he originally signed a five-year pact that was worth about $10 million (which included a performance-bonus structure). After earning $1.8 million last season (with an additional $575,000 in bonus for the team’s Final Four run), Davis’ new deal will pay him nearly $2.8 million per season, with him earning $2.3 million for the 2022-2023 season while increasing to $3.1 million by the end of the contract.

This new deal will not only compensate Davis for his strong early performance on the job but will keep him in Chapel Hill through the 2027-2028 season. The lifelong Tar Heel will now focus his attention on the upcoming season, as he hopes to lead his beloved program to a national championship title.
