UNC Basketball: Alyssa Ustby named to Miller Award Watch List
UNC basketball standout Alyssa Ustby has been named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List for the second consecutive season.
Expectations are high for the UNC women’s basketball program, as some of the team’s standout players are earning some notable preseason honors.
Heading into the 2022-2023 season, junior forward Alyssa Ustby has been named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List. This award is given annually to the nation’s best small forward.
This is the second consecutive year that Ustby has earned her way onto this list, as she is one of 20 players to be recognized. As a sophomore, the Rochester, Minnesota native led the Tar Heels with 8.6 rebounds per game, and her 12.9 points per game ranked second-highest on last year’s squad.
Head coach Courtney Banghart knows how important Ustby is to the UNC basketball program.
"“Alyssa is undoubtedly one of the most versatile players in the country.” She is elite in transition, can guard all positions, and can score from so many spots on the floor. Her relentless motor and extreme competitiveness separate her from so many. She will be a key part of our team again this season, and a premier player in the ACC.”"
The Tar Heels have high aspirations heading into the new season and it’s no secret that Ustby will play a major role for this year’s team. After a strong sophomore season, along with gaining some valuable experiences playing for Team USA over the summer, Ustby is definitely a player who could be in line to have a breakout season during the 2022-2023 campaign.
Ustby and the UNC basketball program open up their season on November 9, as they’ll host Jackson State in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
