The Preseason AP Top 25 poll has been released, as the UNC women’s basketball program will start the season with its highest ranking in quite some time.

For the first time in seven years, the UNC women’s basketball program will start the season ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 poll.

The Tar Heels, led by head coach Courtney Banghart, come in as the No. 12 ranked team to begin the 2022-2023 season. This not only serves as the program’s highest preseason ranking since the 2013-2014 season but is also their highest overall ranking since January 18, 2015.

North Carolina is one of five ACC programs ranked in the preseason AP Top 25. Although none of the conference programs are among the top six spots on the list, all five are ranked in the top 13, showing how deep this conference is expected to be this season.

Coming off a trip to the Sweet 16 last season, the UNC women’s basketball program is certainly on the rise. With four starters returning, Banghart and the Tar Heels have high expectations heading into the new season and look to go even further in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

With the likes of Deja Kelly, Kennedy Todd-Williams, and Alyssa Ustby back in the mix, the Tar Heels certainly have enough talent and depth to be one of the best teams in the country this season. Although it won’t be easy, the UNC women’s basketball program is definitely ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead.
