The UNC basketball program has added another member of the Maye family, as Beau Maye joins the team as a walk-on for the upcoming season.

On Wednesday, the UNC basketball program released its official roster for the 2022-2023 season. They announced that the team has added a walk-on to the roster, one that has a very familiar last name in Chapel Hill.

Beau Maye is the latest addition to the roster, as he continues the family tradition of competing for the Tar Heels.

His father, Mark, played for the UNC football program from 1983-1988. His older brother Luke put together an outstanding career for the UNC basketball program from 2015-2018, while his younger brother Drake is currently the Tar Heels football team’s starting quarterback.

Beau has had quite an interesting path to get to this point.

Maye was a standout performer at Hough High School, but his junior season was cut short to just four games after he suffered a season-ending knee injury. He returned for his senior season and put together a strong campaign, but it was evident that the injury altered his college recruitment.

Instead of pursuing playing opportunities out of high school, Maye decided to enroll at North Carolina and leave the sport of basketball behind. However, after just a year in Chapel Hill, Beau had the urge to play again and was about to transfer to a Division III program.

Then, another knee injury happened.

The injury kept him at North Carolina, as he worked himself not only back into shape, but onto the UNC basketball program’s roster.

This is definitely a great story, as Maye will look to not only carry on his family’s legacy in Chapel Hill, but also help the Tar Heels basketball team in anyway that he can moving forward.
