Will UNC football standout Josh Downs be ready to return to action when the Tar Heels host Notre Dame this upcoming weekend?

Since suffering an injury during the UNC football program’s first game of the 2022 season, Josh Downs hasn’t stepped on the field for the Tar Heels.

After missing two games, all signs point to Downs returning to the field when the Tar Heels return from their “bye week” on Saturday afternoon.

Matt Zenitz of On3 has reported that Downs is on track to being available when North Carolina takes on Notre Dame in Chapel Hill on Saturday afternoon. His return would be a major boost for a Tar Heels offense that has started off the season on a rather good note.

Coming into the season, Downs was expected to be the focal point of the Tar Heels’ offensive attack. As a sophomore, Downs set North Carolina single-season records in both catches and receiving yards while also making an impact returning punts on special teams.

Not only may the Tar Heels have Downs back, but fellow wide receiver Antoine Green may make his season debut as well. Their potential return would be beneficial for first-year signal caller Drake Maye, who has done a tremendous job spreading the football around in their absence.

Although Notre Dame comes in with a 1-2 record, this is still a very big game for the UNC football program. The news about Downs is very encouraging, as the hope is that he’ll continue to trend towards taking the field as we get closer to kickoff.
