On Monday, Mack Brown confirmed that redshirt freshman Drake Maye will get the start in the UNC football program’s season opener.

The post-Sam Howell era begins with redshirt freshman Drake Maye.

On Monday, Mack Brown confirmed to the media that Maye will indeed get the start on Saturday night in the UNC football program’s season opener against Florida A&M. The Huntersville, North Carolina native will get the first crack at the team’s starting quarterback position.

The competition between Maye and Jacolby Criswell lasted throughout training camp, as Brown and the Tar Heels coaching staff took the time to evaluate the position. Although Maye will be under center to start the game, Brown added that Criswell will see some game action in the team’s season opener.

As training camp went on, the feeling was that Maye was going to be the team’s starter. Dating back to when Maye flipped his commitment from Alabama to join the UNC football program, it simply felt as if Maye was the heir to the throne once Howell departed Chapel Hill.

Now, we finally know who will start the game for the Tar Heels, and we’ll simply have to wait and see how it plays out. Maye has gotten the nod to begin the season, and he’ll look to solidify himself as the starting quarterback of the future for the UNC football program.
