Unfortunately, former UNC football offensive lineman Marcus McKethan’s rookie season in the NFL is over before it even got to begin.

Tough news broke on Saturday afternoon, as it was determined that former UNC football offensive lineman Marcus McKethan suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on Friday evening.

McKethan, a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, was practicing with his new team, the New York Giants, during their annual fanfest scrimmage at MetLife Stadium. While pass blocking, the former Tar Heel suffered the injury, as the cart was almost immediately brought onto the field to attend to the rookie lineman.

The Giants announced on Saturday that they have placed McKethan on the Reserve/Injured list, ending his season before it was able to get fully started.

With the Giants struggling for offensive line depth, the timing of his injury is unfortunate to say the least. During the summer, McKethan was working mostly as a guard but has seen the majority of his reps at right tackle early on in training camp.

The 6-foot-7, 335-pound lineman was expected to be a backup on the offensive line while seeing some playing time with the special teams unit. McKethan, and fellow former UNC football standout Josh Ezeudu, have both been working hard to earn a spot on the team’s starting offensive line.

McKethan was a two-time All-ACC honorable mention selection during his time in Chapel Hill. The hope is that the former Tar Heel will be able to fully recover and come back next season to help the Giants on the offensive front.
