A little over a month since he committed to the UNC football recruiting team, Class of 2023 prospect Zachary Tobe has changed his mind.

Back on June 28, the UNC football recruiting team picked up a commitment from three-star Class of 2023 safety Zachary Tobe.

Just a few weeks after his initial commitment, Tobe changed his future plans, ones that won’t be leading him to Chapel Hill.

On Inside Carolina, rumors began to swirl on Friday evening that Tobe was on the verge of decommitting. The rumors became true on Saturday morning, as the Ocoee, Florida native flipped his commitment to Illinois.

This is a big flip for the Illini, as he becomes the fourth-highest rated player in their 2023 recruiting class. For the Tar Heels, it’s disappointing to subtract a versatile secondary player from their commitment list.

According to 247Sports Composite, Tobe is viewed as the No. 69 overall safety in his graduating class. The six-foot-one rising senior is ranked as the No. 124 ranked player coming out of the state of Florida.

With Tobe heading to Illinois, the Tar Heels now have 14 Class of 2023 players currently committed to the program. This group of talent is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 26 overall class in the country up to this point.

Situations like these go to show you how fast things can change on the recruiting trail. With Tobe heading elsewhere, Mack Brown and his staff will continue to look for players that want to be a part of the UNC football program moving forward.
