Heading into his junior season, UNC football standout defensive lineman Myles Murphy has been named to yet another preseason award watch list.

UNC football standout Myles Murphy has earned some notable recognition heading into his junior season.

First, the Greensboro, North Carolina native was named to both the watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Outland Trophy. On Monday, Murphy was added to yet another preseason award watch list.

Murphy was named to the Bednarik Award watch list, one of the most prestigious honors that a defensive player can receive. Since 1994, this award has been presented to the most outstanding defensive player in college football, regardless of position.

With defensive coordinator Gene Chizik back in town, the Tar Heels are hopeful that its defense will step up to the occasion during the 2022 season. It’s safe to say that Murphy will play a big part in the team’s defensive scheme.

Last season, Murphy earned second-team All-ACC honors. As a sophomore, Murphy recorded 38 total tackles, three pass breakups, and one hurry. He also ranked second on the Tar Heels in tackles for loss (eight) and sacks (four).

North Carolina will rely on their defensive unit even more this season, as they hope that Chizik’s return will help spark a unit that is full of talent. Murphy is one of those talented players, as his veteran presence will be called upon to help re-write the narrative in Chapel Hill.
