Construction is underway at Kenan Stadium, as the UNC football program will receive a renovation and expansion of the Kenan Football Center.

Fans that attended the UNC football program’s open practice on Saturday afternoon got to see the early construction that is going on around Kenan Stadium.

In an effort to provide the student-athletes with better facilities, the are renovations and additions being made to the Kenan Football Center.

Approved on January 27 by the UNC Board of Trustees, the expansion is expected to affect the northwest side of the football center. The proposed design included a wider staircase, a plaza for visitors as well as a basketball court. The open-air plaza space is expected to also feature couches, a bar, and fire pits.

As part of this projected $15 million dollar project, the training and treatment space is also going to be revamped to coincide with the modernized players’ lounge. The goal, as per-head coach Mack Brown, is “to take care of our players.”

The original Kenan Football Center was constructed in 1997, Brown’s last year at the helm during his first stint with the Tar Heels. Now, over 20 years later, the University of North Carolina is making a tremendous effort to improve its facilities for the sake of the student-athletes that utilize them on a daily basis.
