Former National Championship-winning quarterback Greg McElroy believes that “we were all a year early on the UNC Football program.”

The preseason is built for bold predictions, as former Alabama quarterback and now college football analyst Greg McElroy has some surrounding this year’s UNC football squad.

On a recent episode of his podcast, “Always College Football,” McElroy tabbed the Tar Heels to win the Coastal Division during the 2022 season.

In the above snippet of his podcast, McElroy brings up some notable points regarding both this year’s and last year’s squads. The high expectations that surrounded the 2021 team were essentially squashed during the team’s opening game, as Mack Brown and his group were unable to live up to the hype that surrounded them heading into the season.

The former Alabama quarterback doesn’t seem worried about the team’s quarterback competition. Even though he doesn’t want to put too much stock into the program’s annual spring game, from watching this contest, McElroy believes that they have “more than enough to win” under center.

On the defensive side of the ball, McElroy believes that Gene Chizik will be a game-changer for this unit. As he returns to Chapel Hill for his second stint, McElroy reminds us all that the Tar Heels were essentially one win away from the College Football Playoff the last time Chizik took over as the team’s defensive coordinator.

It’s a bold take from McElroy for sure, as the UNC football program is seen as more of an “underdog” this season.

However, based on the points he brings up, it shouldn’t be out of the question that this group has the talent and ability to be a surprise contender in the ACC this season.
