Unfortunately for the UNC football recruiting team, five-star recruit Caleb Downs will not be following in his brother Josh’s footsteps to Chapel Hill.

Today was a big day in the college football recruiting world, as five-star safety Caleb Downs made his official decision.

Downs, the No. 1 player coming out of the state of Georgia and 247Sports Composite’s No. 12 overall prospect, has some ties to the UNC football program. If the last name didn’t give it away, yes, Caleb is the younger brother of current Tar Heels standout wide receiver Josh Downs.

Even though North Carolina was among Downs’ finalists, the family ties weren’t enough to lure him to Chapel Hill.

Downs announced that he will be attending the University of Alabama. The Hoschton, Georgia native chose the Crimson Tide over Georgia, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.

Over the last few weeks, Alabama was reported to be the favorite in his recruitment. With his commitment, Alabama now has three five-star defensive back prospects among their recruiting Class of 2023.

It’s definitely disappointing that Downs isn’t heading to Chapel Hill, but the writing was essentially on the wall as his decision day drew closer. Although they missed out on this talented prospect, Mack Brown and his staff will get back on the recruiting trail to find some more talent to bring to North Carolina.
