Mack Brown: “UNC football “criminally underrated” this year
UNC football head coach Mack Brown spoke on Thursday morning as part of ACC Media Day. What did he have to say about this year’s team?
The annual ACC Media Day kicked off on Thursday morning, as each program will have a few representatives speak to the media about their upcoming seasons.
For the UNC football program, the goal is to redeem themselves after a very disappointing 6-7 2021 season. Unlike last year, this year’s squad doesn’t have the preseason hype, as many believed the Tar Heels would be a top-10 team throughout the season.
During Mack Brown’s media session, the Tar Heels head coach was asked about his team being “criminally underrated” this year. He seems to be pleased with what the media thinks about his team, as he made a bold statement comparing this year’s group to last season’s team.
Brown’s response to the question was rather simple: “I love it because we were criminally overrated last year.”
For teams with high expectations, the pressure is on for to perform. Brown noted that the team lacked consistency, something he took the blame for as the team’s leader, and said that they’ve been working on making adjustments to improve moving forward. He also cited that the team has emphasized three primary areas that they can improve upon this season:
Passion, accountability, and toughness.
Being underrated could be a very good thing for any team. Not only does it put a bit of a chip on your shoulder, but it adds motivation to prove everyone wrong.
For last year’s team, people knew they were a good squad, led by now NFL quarterback Sam Howell. They weren’t sneaking up on anyone, as every team they faced brought their best effort against the Tar Heels.
As they head into the season as “criminally underrated” the UNC football program’s goal is to simply prove to everyone that they are better than anticipated.
With the talent that the Tar Heels have, it definitely is possible to accomplish.
