Coming off a tremendous sophomore season, UNC football standout Josh Downs has been named a Preseason All-American by The Sporting News.

On Friday, Sporting News released their annual Preseason All-American selections for the 2022 college football season. They are one of the five media outlets that are used to determine consensus All-American status at the end of each season.

After putting together a very strong sophomore season, UNC football standout Josh Downs is among the players selected for this year’s preseason recognition.

Downs is the only Tar Heel to make the Preseason All-American team, as he’s just one of seven ACC players to earn the honor. Sporting News tabs Downs, along with Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, as their second team wideout duo.

After seeing limited action during the 2020 season, Downs had a breakout season in 2021. The Suwanee, Georgia native recorded 101 catches for 1,335 yards and eight touchdowns while also making an impact as a punt returner as well.

With the Tar Heels losing the likes of Dyami Brown and Dazz Newsome to the NFL, Downs quickly became Sam Howell’s top target. Whenever North Carolina needed a big-time play, it was Downs who was the “go-to” guy.

Heading into his junior season, not only is Downs considered one of (if not the) best wide receiver in the entire ACC, but ranks among the top players at his position in the entire country. Although it’s uncertain as to who will be under center for the UNC football program, it’s definitely assuring to know that they’ll have a top-tier weapon like Downs to work with.

With another big season, Downs could easily be in consideration to be one of the top wide receivers taken in next year’s NFL Draft. Although he has his sights set on a future in the pros, the rising junior still has some business to take care of in Chapel Hill.
