Well, it’s now official: after weeks of speculation, Gregory “G.G.” Jackson has decided to de-commit from the UNC basketball program.

For the first time ever, a player has de-committed from the UNC basketball program.

Gregory “G.G.” Jackson, the No. 1 overall player in the Class of 2023, has decided to re-open his commitment to explore other options. This decision is no surprise, as it has been rumored over the last couple of weeks.

Jamie Shaw of On3 sparked the initial report, much to the dismay of Tar Heels fans. However, Shaw was right on, as the old saying goes, “where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”

Jackson’s stock continued to soar, and the rumblings of his family looking to guide him towards re-classifying to the Class of 2022 got louder. This was a concern for the Tar Heels, as they had no scholarships to offer in the event that he did decide to move up a year.

Even after Frank Martin was fired, Jackson has still been heavily tied to South Carolina. If Jackson decides to forgo the professional route, he’s expected to commit to playing for the Gamecocks this upcoming season.

Jackson met all the necessary requirements to graduate high school early, so he would have had to find a prep school to attend for the upcoming calendar year. However, that doesn’t seem to be an issue anymore, as Jackson is expected to progress to the next level, it’s just a matter of which route he decides to take.

Although it is really disappointing, especially given that North Carolina does not have a history of players taking back their commitments, I think we can all agree that we’re glad that this saga is now over. From the rumored reports to Jackson’s liking (and unliking) of tweets on social media, it got to the point where we all just wanted him to drop the ball that he wasn’t making his way to Chapel Hill.

Now that this is over, let’s all focus on the 2022-2023 Tar Heels, who are expected to be pretty “Dadgum Good” this season.
