Drake Powell becomes the latest Class of 2024 prospect to receive a scholarship offer from the UNC basketball recruiting team.

The interest in four-star wing Drake Powell began well before assistant coach Jeff Lebo was on the UNC basketball recruiting team and staff.

Lebo was serving as an assistant coach for West Carteret High School when the team advanced to the state playoffs. They would match up with Northwood High School, and Powell put on a performance that stuck with the now Tar Heels assistant coach.

When Lebo was added to Hubert Davis’ staff, he quickly began the pursuit of Powell. The 6-foot-5 wing was on campus multiple times over the last few months, and even received a call from Lebo on June 15, the first official day that juniors could receive calls directly from college coaches.

All that was missing was an actual offer, which isn’t the case anymore.

On his personal Twitter account, Powell announced that he has received an offer from the University of North Carolina. Powell becomes the sixth player from the Class of 2024 to receive an offer from the Tar Heels.

Powell is not only regarded as one of the best players in the state of North Carolina, but also as one of the top prospects at his respective position throughout the entire country.

In their latest ratings, 247Sports Composite tabs Powell as the No. 3 overall player in his state and ranks him as the No. 15 small forward prospect in his respective graduating class.

Powell joins Jarin Stevenson as the only 2024 in-state players to receive an offer from the UNC basketball recruiting team thus far. The Tar Heels are hopeful that they’ll be able to convince these top talents that staying home is the best route to go.
