UNC Basketball: Kenny Williams signs new professional contract
After spending last season with Kolossos Rhodes in Greece, former UNC basketball standout Kenny Williams has signed with another professional team.
Former UNC basketball standout Kenny Williams has found a new home for the upcoming season.
Williams has signed a one-year deal with AEK Athens BC, a Greek professional basketball club. The former Tar Heel spent last season with another Greek League team, Kolossos Rodou B.C.
In 26 games played last season, Williams averaged 12.9 points per game while shooting just under 37 percent from three-point range. The Richmond, Virginia native contributed in multiple ways, as he also averaged 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest.
Williams’ move to his new team shouldn’t be surprising, given AEK Athens BC’s recent leadership change. His former head coach with Kolossos Rodou B.C., Ilias Kantzouris, has recently been tabbed as AEK Athens BC’s new leader, so it shouldn’t shock anyone that Williams signed with a team that has a head coach who he’s already very familiar with.
There have been quite a few notable college standouts that have taken their talents overseas. For the UNC basketball program, some examples include (but aren’t limited to): Jawad Williams and Ty Lawson.
It’s great to see Williams finding success in Greece, as he’s played his way into another professional contract. As he’s set to turn 26 in November, there is still plenty of good basketball in the tank for the Tar Heel alum.
