UNC Basketball Recruiting: Is GG Jackson set to decommit?

The most recent GG Jackson intel does not favor the UNC basketball program, as the No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2023 may be heading elsewhere. 

Buckle up UNC basketball fans, we may be on the verge of a bumpy ride.

On Sunday morning, Jamie Shaw of On3 released an article detailing the latest intel on GG Jackson’s recruitment. Now, you may be saying to yourself:

“Isn’t Jackson fully committed to North Carolina?”

Well, based on what Shaw is reporting, Jackson may be heading towards a change of plans.

In this On3 exclusive content, Shaw starts off by breaking down how Jackson, the No. 1 rated player in the Class of 2023 (according to 247Sports Composite) was essentially a lock to commit to Frank Martin and South Carolina.

The school administration assured Jackson that Martin would not be fired, but about a month later, the Gamecocks’ head coach was relieved of his duties. At that point, North Carolina shifted as the favorite for Jackson, and ultimately landed a commitment from him.

Shaw goes on to say that On3 has received reports of Jackson looking to reclassify into the Class of 2022. This was his original plan if he had gone to South Carolina, as he was aiming toward being part of the 2023 NBA Draft class.

According to the report, the talk of Jackson reclassifying heated up again once Pete Nance committed to North Carolina, thus taking the program’s final available scholarship. The belief is that Jackson was looking to reclass in an attempt to join this year’s Tar Heels squad.

Given that he has completed all of his necessary high school requirements, Jackson can still elect to graduate early (and thus, most likely flip his commitment to South Carolina). He also has the G-League as another formidable option, if he does decide to go the professional route.

Did the UNC basketball program’s handling of their roster hamper their relationship with Jackson? Was he intent on reclassifying, and was left with no other option given the Tar Heels’ now full roster?

At this point, the speculation seems to be pointing towards Jackson heading elsewhere, something that is certainly not good news for the UNC basketball program.
