UNC Basketball: Garrison Brooks lands Exhibit 10 NBA contract

Even though he wasn’t selected in Thursday’s NBA Draft, former UNC basketball standout Garrison Brooks has signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Knicks.

The NBA Draft has come and gone, as 58 players were fortunate to hear their names called during the two-round event.

Unfortunately, for former UNC basketball standout Garrison Brooks, he was not one of those names called during the draft. Although he was not selected, Brooks will have the opportunity to work his way onto an NBA roster this summer.

According to Director of Scouting Andrew Slater, the former Tar Heel has signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the New York Knicks. This news came on Friday morning, just hours after the NBA Draft concluded.

You may be wondering, “what exactly is an Exhibit 10 contract?”

To put it into simple terms: an Exhibit 10 deal is a one-year, minimum-salary contract that counts toward a team’s 20-man offseason roster limit. However, it does not count against the team’s salary cap unless the player makes the regular-season roster.

Essentially, Brooks will likely take part in Summer League action, as the team will further evaluate his skill set to see if he’s a match for what they are looking for. If he impresses during the summer, the Knicks can add him to their active roster. If not, his deal will not impact the Knicks’ salary cap moving forward.

It’s a great opportunity for Brooks, as he’ll be able to showcase his talent to NBA executives around the league. Even if he doesn’t end up with the Knicks, it’s possible that another team will have interest in him based on his Summer League performance.

Brooks put together a tremendous career at North Carolina and had a solid final season at Mississippi State. Now, he’ll look to prove that he’s worthy of a spot on an NBA roster moving forward.
