It’s official: UNC basketball transfer Kerwin Walton has announced his commitment to the program that was viewed as the “front runner.”

The speculation surrounding Kerwin Walton’s recruitment was proven true on Monday night.

Walton announced that he will be transferring to Texas Tech. This comes just a few days after the UNC basketball transfer picked up a Crystal Ball prediction in favor of the Red Raiders.

The Hopkins, Minnesota native chose Texas Tech over Clemson, Kansas State Memphis, and Oklahoma. Here’s what Walton told On3 about why he chose to continue his collegiate career at Texas Tech.

"“I really like the basketball atmosphere around Texas Tech. I felt that I could make an immediate impact and help the team win and continue to grow as a basketball player.”"

After a strong freshman season in Chapel Hill, Walton went through a rough second season on campus. The Tar Heels got better, and Waltons minutes (and production) dipped in the process, as he had trouble cracking into Hubert Davis’ rotation, especially during the team’s postseason run.

Walton becomes the tenth, yes tenth, player added to Mark Adams’ recruiting class. He is the sixth transfer to join the Red Raiders, as the program will have a whole new look during the 2022-2023 season.

Although his time in Chapel Hill didn’t go as planned, Walton will have a fresh start at Texas Tech. Maybe a change of scenery will do him well as he looks to get back on track and prove that he is still a very capable contributor at the college level.
