UNC Baseball begins NCAA Tournament with impressive victory
The UNC baseball program opened up their NCAA Regional play with an impressive victory over Hofstra on Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill.
It was a great start to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the UNC baseball program, as the Tar Heels rolled to a convincing 15-4 victory over Hofstra on Friday afternoon.
Playing at Boshamer Stadium, the Tar Heels certainly used their home field advantage to their favor.
North Carolina hit five home runs as part of their major offensive effort. The entire starting lineup recorded a hit, and eight of the 9 Tar Heel starters scored a run in the game.
Mac Horvath was the star for the Tar Heels, as he went 3-4 with two home runs, and four RBIs to go along with three runs scored. Horvath became the first UNC baseball player to hit multiple home runs in an NCAA Tournament contest since Aaron Sabato did so back during the 2019 Super Regionals.
Colby Wilkerson and Angel Zarate recorded three-hit games, while Tomas Frick, Danny Serretti, and Vance Honeycutt added home runs in the game.
Max Carlson got the start and put together a solid effort through 5.2 innings of work. The right-hander allowed just three earned runs (two of which came off solo home runs in the first two innings of play) and was able to work in and out of jams throughout his outing.
With the win, the UNC baseball program has now won eight straight contests. They will face either No. 2 Georgia or No. 3 VCU in the winner’s bracket on Saturday, June 4, at 6 p.m in Chapel Hill.
