The UNC baseball has thrived with the long ball during the 2022 season. Can the Tar Heels break the program’s single-season record?

It’s been a home run-friendly season for the UNC baseball program.

Heading into the NCAA Tournament, the Tar Heels have slugged 86 long balls during the course of their regular season and ACC Tournament play. This is the fourth-most that a Diamond Heels team has hit over a single season.

The bulk of the slugging for the Tar Heels has come from a trio of position players. Vance Honeycutt (21), Alberto Osuna (19), and Mac Horvath have combined to hit 56 of the team’s 86 total homers. If you’re looking for the math on that one, the three players have combined for 65 percent of the team’s home runs.

Eight other Tar Heels have combined to hit the other 30 home runs that go into the team’s full total. Altogether, the long ball has been a useful asset in helping the Diamond Heels have so much success this season.

The question remains: can the UNC baseball program challenge the school record for homers in a single season?

It will definitely be a challenge, but hey, anything’s possible, right?!

If they make a run in NCAA Tournament, this record could definitely be in reach. We’ll have to wait and see if the UNC baseball program can slug their way to a deep tournament run over the next couple of weeks.
