FOX tabs UNC Football standout as one of best at his position
According to FOX College Football, this UNC football standout is considered one of the top players at his respective position heading into the new season.
During his time with the UNC football program, Tar Heel faithful has seen first-hand just how talented of a football player Josh Downs is.
In fact, heading into his junior season, Downs is starting to receive the national attention that he deserves.
FOX College Sports recently took to social media to ask fans who they thought the best wide receiver in college football is heading into the 2022 season. Downs was one of five wide receivers in the image, as the Tar Heel star was joined by Jordan Addison of USC, Jaxon Smith-Njigba of Ohio State, Kayshon Boutte of LSU as well as Xavier Worthy of Texas as the top considerations for the honor.
In an article going more in-depth about the discussion, here’s a little breakdown as to why FOX has Downs in this mix:
"Downs, a First-Team All-ACC selection in 2021, reeled in 101 catches for 1,335 yards — both program records — and eight TDs in 13 games last season. He had eight or more catches in 11 of those 13 games and scored in eight-straight games — just one TD short of the UNC school record.Downs led the ACC and ranked fifth nationally in receptions (101) and was second in the league and 11th nationally in receiving yards (1,335). He has racked up 108 career receptions for 1,454 yards and 11 TDs in 17 games over two seasons with the Tar Heels."
The numbers don’t lie: Downs has been one of the best wide receivers in all of college football. He’s coming off a monster sophomore season and will look to produce even more during his upcoming junior season.
As the UNC football program goes through a major quarterback change this season, it’s certain that Downs will be called upon even more to be the top target for whoever ends up being under center once the regular season gets underway.
Based on what we already know, Downs will still continue to be a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.
