The UNC women’s lacrosse program completed its remarkable season by bringing home the third national championship in school history.

It’s a GREAT DAY TO BE A TAR HEEL!

The UNC women’s lacrosse program capped off a perfect season by defeating Boston College in the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship game on Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Tar Heels their third national title in program history.

After their miraculous comeback in the semifinals against Northwestern, North Carolina didn’t have to play comeback queens in this one. Instead, they paced their attack and were able to hold off the Eagles in a very close, yet exciting championship bout.

In what will be her final game as a UNC women’s lacrosse player, Taylor Moreno improved her career record in goal to 70-6. Beginning in 2018, she started 76 consecutive games at the position for the Tar Heels.

Sam Geiersbach, who was the hero of the Tar Heels’ aforementioned come-from-behind win over Northwestern, led North Carolina in scoring with a hat trick. The Tar Heels also received two goals each from Ally Mastroianni and Jamie Ortega.

Speaking of Ortega, she set a new program record with 113 points in a single season. She broke her own previous record of 112 that she set during the 2019 season.

As a team, North Carolina completed their first undefeated season in program history. It also serves as the first undefeated national championship season by any team since Maryland accomplished the feat back in 2017.

It was a special year to say the least for the UNC women’s lacrosse program, as this season will certainly go down as one of the best in North Carolina history. To add to this, it’s even more special that this senior class, who complied an 83-9 overall record with the program over their five seasons in Chapel Hill, are going out on top.
