Standout Baylor transfer Matthew Mayer narrowed his recruitment to four programs. Is the UNC basketball program still in the mix?

After withdrawing from the NBA Draft on May 21, we knew that it wouldn’t take long for Matthew Mayer’s recruitment to heat up.

Mayer, a standout transfer from Baylor, decided it was in his best interest to spend another season at the college level. Just five days after that decision, Mayer has narrowed his recruitment down to four finalists, with the UNC basketball program being one of them.

North Carolina is joined by Illinois, Memphis, and Texas Tech as the finalists to land Mayer. The hope is that when he makes a final decision, it will lead him to Chapel Hill.

Of course, bringing in a player of Mayer’s caliber would definitely help fill the void left by Brady Manek. With one season of eligibility remaining, the former Baylor Bear could have a similar impact as Manek did, as he’ll have the potential to come in and help this veteran group finish what they started during the 2021-2022 season.

It’s a great sign that the Tar Heels are in the mix, and based on the recent speculation, it wouldn’t be outrageous to say that the UNC basketball program may be one of the favorites in this race. Regardless of how it shapes out, you know that Hubert Davis and his staff (Armando Bacot included!) are doing whatever they can to convince the talented big man that he should bring his talents to Chapel Hill.
