Behind a strong pitching performance from Max Carlson, the UNC baseball program defeated Clemson in their ACC Tournament opener.

Max Carlson put together arguably his best start as a Tar Heel as the UNC baseball program defeated Clemson in their opening game of the ACC Tournament pool play.

Carlson, a sophomore right-hander from Savage, Minnesota, allowed just one run over his six innings of work. This outing marks his second-longest as a Tar Heel, as he took advantage of the run support that his offense provided during his time on the mound.

Outfielder Angel Zarate had a fantastic day at the plate, as he recorded four hits and four runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Teammates Danny Serretti and Vance Honeycutt did damage in the middle part of the order, as both players recorded two runs batted in.

The Tar Heels continue their stellar play, as they’ve now won 12 of their last 14 games. This steak has been led by a strong offensive attack, as North Carolina has scored seven or more runs in each of their previous seven games as well as 10 out of their last 14 contests.

It doesn’t get easier for the UNC baseball program, as they’ll take on top-seeded Virginia Tech on Friday night. The winner will claim Pool A’s spot in Saturday’s 1 p.m. semifinal game.

With the way that Scott Forbes’ team has been playing, this group certainly has what it takes to pull off the upset against Virginia Tech under the lights on Friday night.
