The UNC football program received some great news, as four-star defensive lineman Joel Starlings has committed to the Tar Heels.

On Monday, the UNC football program picked up their third commitment from the Class of 2023, as four-star defensive lineman Joel Starlings announced that he will be joining the Tar Heels.

After initially committing to Michigan, Starlings decided that it was in his best interest to re-open his recruitment. About a month ago, the Richmond, Virginia native narrowed his choices to five programs and intended to take an official visit to each campus.

Well, fortunately for the Tar Heels, his plans took a bit of a turn.

Over the weekend, Starlings made his first official visit of his planned tour, as he and his family took the trip to Chapel Hill. The visit was enough to convince him that North Carolina was the right place for him.

The  6-foot-5, 310-pound defensive lineman from Benedictine High School chose the Tar Heels over Oklahoma, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Currently, 247 Sports Composite tabs Starlings as the No. 33 overall rated defensive lineman in his class and views him as the fourth-best prospect out of the state of Virginia. His rating will definitely go up if he can follow up his monster junior season in which he recorded 76 tackles (10 for loss), five sacks, and a forced fumble.

This is a great pickup for Mack Brown and his staff, as they look to continue adding on to the 2023 recruiting class. The Tar Heels are far from done with this class, but they are certainly off to a solid start with the three players they’ve secured commitments from already.
