UNC Basketball: Bullock named Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion
Former UNC basketball standout and current Dallas Maverick Reggie Bullock has been named the 2022 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion.
Earlier in the week, former UNC basketball standout Reggie Bullock was named one of five finalists for the 2022 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award.
On Sunday, it was announced that Bullock was named this year’s award recipient.
Bullock was selected for his dedication to pursuing social justice and advancing Abdul-Jabbar’s life mission to engage, empower and drive equality for individuals and groups who have been historically marginalized or systemically disadvantaged, specifically within the LGBTQ+ community.
His mission began when his sister, Mia Henderson, who was a transgender woman, was murdered back in 2014. To honor her legacy, the former Tar Heel has honored her legacy by fighting for increased visibility and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community. Since joining the Dallas Mavericks organization, Bullock has teamed up with organizations in the area to help promote this important cause.
Last June, Bullock wrote an article for The Players Tribune, which discussed the murders of both his older and younger sister. The article was intended to advocate for greater awareness regarding gun violence and hate crimes against women.
With this award, the NBA will make a $100,000 donation to the organization of his choice. The former Tar Heel has selected Kinston Teens, a youth-led organization focused on community development and youth empowerment in his native Kinston, North Carolina, to receive the contribution on his behalf.
