Joe Lunardi currently views the UNC basketball program as one of his top seeds in his early 2023 NCAA Tournament Bracketology rankings.

It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that the expectations for the UNC basketball program are very high heading into the 2022-2023 season.

Yes, it’s only May… we’re still a few months away from the official start of the college basketball season.

However, that doesn’t stop ESPN’s Joe Lunardi from sending out his latest Bracketology updates, and you may be interested to see how he views them at this point of the offseason.

Coming off an NCAA Tournament run that resulted in a national championship game appearance, Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels will return four of their five starters for another season. With redemption on their minds, Lunardi currently ranks North Carolina as one of the top teams in the entire country.

In his latest Bracketology, Lunardi tabs the UNC basketball program as a No. 1 seed and the No. 2 seed overall. As the top seed in the East region, the Tar Heels would play their first two games in Greensboro, North Carolina, and would play at Madison Square Garden in New York if they are able to advance to the Sweet 16.

Here’s what Lunardi had to say regarding the Tar Heels’ jump to the No. 2 overall seed:

"It comes as no surprise that the runner-up for the 2022 national championship, North Carolina, has positioned itself to finish the job in 2023. With the confirmation that four starters — Leaky Black, Caleb Love, R.J. Davis and Armando Bacot — are returning for Hubert Davis, the Tar Heels can think seriously about a Final Four repeat and perhaps a second straight title game appearance. The Heels move up to No. 2 overall in this bracket, trailing only Kentucky on the seed list."

Of course, a lot will change between now and the opening night tip-off. North Carolina still has a scholarship available, and if Davis and his staff could haul in another major transfer player (such as Matthew Mayer from Baylor), this could only lead to even higher expectations for the Tar Heels next season.
