UNC Basketball: James Worthy names best college team he faced
Former UNC basketball standout and NBA Hall of Famer James Worthy took to social media to name the best college team he faced as a Tar Heel.
James Worthy surely faced some top-flight competition during his basketball playing days. From his time with the UNC basketball program to his journey through his Hall of Fame NBA career, the former Tar Heel matched up with some great teams.
However, as he reflects on his days at North Carolina, which team was the best one that he faced as a Tar Heel?
According to Worthy, one team stands out the most.
On Twitter, Worthy took the time to record a video to answer a fan’s question that was sent to him on Facebook. The question asked Worthy to name the best team he faced at North Carolina, and his answer really shouldn’t be that big of a surprise.
Worthy stated that the 1982 Georgetown Hoyas were the best squad that the Tar Heels encountered during his time in Chapel Hill. He specifically mentioned senior Sleepy Floyd (who was his hometown friend) as well as freshman Patrick Ewing as the two standout players for the Hoyas.
The former Tar Heel standout also mentioned how Georgetown, led by legendary head coach John Thompson, had an advantage, given that they went 9 players deep into their rotation. He cites that Dean Smith only typically used six players, so the extra depth of the Hoyas was a bit of a disadvantage for the Tar Heels.
Worthy went on to say that it took “everything we had” to defeat Georgetown in the national championship game. As he discussed the Tar Heels, Worthy mentioned some of his teammates, including Sam Perkins, Jimmy Black, Matt Doherty, and, of course, Michael Jordan.
Social media provides fans with a unique opportunity to interact with some of their favorite athletes. This type of “question and answer” segment is a great way for fans to hear what Worthy has to say about some notable things that went on throughout his playing career.
