Former UNC baseball standout Zac Gallen has been one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball over the first few weeks of the season.

Throughout the first few weeks of the Major League Baseball season, former UNC baseball standout Zac Gallen has been one of the best starting pitchers in the sport.

In five starts, Gallen has allowed just three earned runs over 28.1 innings of work. Although he has just two victories to his name so far, the Diamondbacks have won four of his first five outings.

His latest masterpiece came on Sunday, as he pitched seven shutout innings in a win over the Colorado Rockies. The 26-year-old New Jersey native allowed just five hits while striking out seven Rockies hitters.

Gallen has shown flashes of dominance during his time in the big leagues and seems to be developing into one of the best pitchers in the entire sport. If he can avoid injuries that have derailed him a bit over the past few seasons, Gallen has the ability to be in contention for the National League CY Young Award.

When asked about his young standout starter, Diamondbacks pitching coach had some really high praise for the former Tar Heel.

Of course, there’s a ton of baseball left to be played. However, you have to be really encouraged by what Zac Gallen has done so far, as the Diamondbacks are hopeful that he can continue this trend as he works towards being the organization’s ace of the future.
